Nick for Tyler

Friends,

I hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe. There’s a lot going on in the world today, and I want to share what’s been on my heart and mind.

Our country’s social conscience has awakened with new energy, and we have young people to thank for it. They are demanding change in policing, change in schools, change in social justice, and change in the way we treat one another as human beings.

Young people are passionate, they care about the world around them, and they are learning how to engage the levers of government. It is the same passion that made me want to major in political science and pursue a law degree. It is the same passion I have for speaking up for and empowering others. And it is the same passion that drives me to serve the people of Tyler.

The old way of doing things isn’t always good enough. Our community needs the energy and involvement of new leadership that brings fresh ideas and a broader vision to the table. It is time for a new generation to pick up the torch and move the community forward for all people, regardless of age, race, or background. Changing times have made our city council race more important than ever. I want you to join me so that together, we can build a better future for Tyler.

Adelante,

Nick Pesina

I agree. The way you start change is treating the person standing next to you as you wish to be treated. We cannot change the world but we can make a difference in our community and that can change someone else's world.

Facebook Family,

Bianca and I send our hearts out to all of those feeling pain, frustration, anxiety, and anger over the murder of George Floyd. This is just the latest chapter in a brutal history for our country that began with slavery and has continued with systemic and institutional injustices against people of color.

Today, I along with many of my fellow Tylerites of all colors, shapes, and religious affiliations attended a Prayer Vigil in downtown. The message was simple: we CONDEMN police brutality, racism, evil and division. We lifted our community up in prayer, and we acknowledged that although we have come a long way with race relations in America, the current state of affairs is a painful reminder that there is still much work to do. Thank you to our local elected officials and religious leaders for coming together in solidarity.

Peaceful demonstrations, protests, and rallies are part of the fabric of these United States of America. Our country was founded by a group of people protesting the crown in order to pursue their faith. The American Revolution was set off by the Boston Tea Party. We Americans have a strong tradition in demonstrating and protesting as it is our RIGHT guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Do not let the opportunists, who incite violence in an attempt to stain the memory of George Floyd and many others, take from us this moment of truth. We must not allow them to distract us from demanding Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness for all Americans regardless of their race or ethnicity.

It is up to all of us to stand up against racism, hatred, and those who intend to divide us at all costs.

I'll leave you all with one of my favorite quotes: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
